Coaching in the workplace is designed to not only support employees’ engagement and motivation but to also enable them to take action by thinking through challenges and coming up with solutions to their problems. There are numerous benefits to applying the coaching approach at work, not least of which is that it really supports employee empowerment and should prevent the manager from being the bottleneck to performance.
There are benefits for both manager and employee. However, there is a learning curve to pass over before these benefits can be realized. Added to this is the time it takes to coach. However, when an employee comes to their manager with not only a problem but also a solution, this enables managers to focus on future-looking activities, rather than constantly fire-fighting operational challenges.
