Situational Leadership: Will / Skill

Objectives for this article: To understand that an individual’s ability to do a task is not related to our general perspective of someone’s overall performance but is related to how they feel about a specific task and their ability to carry out that same task. To provide guidance as to how they should lead in relation to a task, not just in relation to the individual. An approach for having a check-in conversation to create alignment around both will and skill.

An individual’s motivation and ability have a direct impact on how well they complete a specific task. The challenge for a leader is to understand that motivation and ability aren’t general factors, but are specific to each task that the individual is engaged in. This means that the manager has to lead their individual team members in a specific way relating to the specific tasks with which they are engaged at that time, rather than a broad stroke approach related to a general “perception” of where the manager believes them to be.
