Skill is essential in order to carry out tasks according to expectations. A common occurrence today is that with the speed of development and change, employees are, on a regular basis, having to tackle areas that they are less familiar with. This might be seen as ongoing improvement, but can lead to employees having to constantly develop their skills in order to not only stay relevant but also to be able to tackle new challenges. The challenge is in how we support this development. Whilst there may be transferable skills between one assignment and another, this is not always the case. Managers have to be aware of what the skill level of their employee is when
allocating new tasks—not the general skill, but the skill that is relevant to the new task at hand. It’s too easy to assume that because a person can do one task, that they can also do an unrelated, but vaguely similar, task. This leads not only to a misalignment of expectations but also to a result that is not quite as expected.
