Participation is an important tool for motivation, as well as one way to ensure that good ideas are taken advantage of. This is no less true when it comes to goals. Participation does not mean that everyone is necessarily involved in all issues to the same extent, which would risk losing tempo and ignoring expertise. What it does mean, however, is that we need to involve employees more than we traditionally do when it comes to different aspects of goal setting. Participation also shouldn’t be confused with being informed. We are not just trying to inform people of a decision
taken, but actually giving them influence on decisions made, which they will ultimately be responsible for carrying out.
