Making time to Lead - "The Barrels"

Objectives for this article: To address whether the tasks in the specialist barrel are best undertaken by the manager or whether they are there for some other reason. To identify meaningful leadership activities that actually contribute towards achieving results through others. To get the manager to evaluate their current focus when it comes to their role – how much time do they actually spend in each barrel and does this need to be adjusted?

A manager’s workday is a busy one. The question that needs revisiting on a regular basis is if you are spending your time in the right area. A manager has specific tasks to complete, has to do administration to make the organization run, and has to lead. The balance of where they spend their time is a tricky one. In terms of time spent on leadership, the question is whether this is a focus area or whether it is merely the time left over from operational tasks.
