There are a wide range of behaviors that can fit under the title of conflict. Lively debate can lead to better conclusions and healthy competition can lead to increased output. Other kinds of conflict behavior can negatively impact a team’s or an individual’s performance. This can be something that happens in an instant or which gradually escalates over time. The role of the manager in this situation is to be aware of what is happening and not to allow things to go too far. Conflict can be handled either by setting norms around what happens when conflict escalates in the team, by being active in their leadership approach, or, ultimately, by mediating conflict once it has broken out.
