Communicating Difficult Decisions

Objectives for this article: To provide managers with a model that they can use when delivering difficult messages. To create an understanding that they need to be clear, concrete and often quite direct in their delivery of the message. To understand that as part of the management body, their role is to support the message to their direct reports. (They may disagree in private but not in public.)

There are times when managers need to communicate messages to their teams or individuals in their teams that will not be popular. In some cases, the manager may only be the mouthpiece of senior management. In other cases, this may be team-specific. Whatever the reason, the manager needs to be able to deliver the message in a way that is clear, but also in a way that does not demotivate or affect performance in the longer term.
